When a digital clock reads 3:47, the sum of the digits is 14. How many minutes after 3:47 will the sum of the digits be 20 for the first time?

A) 42
B) 132
C) 192
D) 251
E) 301

As a rule; to check out and eliminate the wrong choices one by one, and if the question is not about finding out a maximum or minimum value, C should be the starting choice.
192 = 3·60 + 12
So, three hours and twelve minutes after 3:47, time is 6:59 and the sum of the digits is 6 + 5 + 9 = 20, then D and E are eliminated.
To be fully certain, if choices A and B are quickly checked:
132 = 2·60 + 12, the time is 5:59, so B is wrong.
42 minutes after 3:47 the time is 4:29 and A is also wrong.
