    Any two digit whole number is (ab) and the difference asked in the problem: 10a + b - a - b = 9a
    Any three digit whole number is (abc) and the difference asked in the problem: 100a + 10b + c - a - b - c = 99a + 9b = 9(11a + b)
    ...
    The rule for the divisibility by 9 is that the sum of all the individual digits must be evenly divisible by 9, and only the number 2996 in choice D outside this rule is correct.
